We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome Shabazz Palaces to Ramsgate on March 28th – one of the most groundbreaking acts in alternative hip-hop today!
Universally adored for a decades’ worth of cutting-edge music, incorporating rap, dub, jazz, R&B, soul, funk, and pop…
“For anyone looking for a mind-expanding trip to the outer edges of the solar system, these rap futurists are your guides” – CLASH
Shabazz Palaces’ ‘Black Up’ was recently hailed as one of the best albums of the decade by outlets like Pitchfork, Gorilla Vs Bear, and Variety. Pitchfork summed it up thusly: “Black Up is drowned in murky instrumentals and bombastic, introspective rhymes. The sounds flirt with jazz but also root themselves in a firm understanding of silence, or the sparse magic of simplicity. The songs teem with unexpected climaxes…From great mystery exploded an album of impossible vision.”
It remains impossible to accurately describe a Shabazz Palaces album without lapsing into cosmic tropes. Yet sometimes clichés are stand-ins for eternal truths. Therein, ‘The Don of Diamond Dreams’ embodies a futuristic manifestation of ancient myth, full of robotic vocoder and warped auto-tune, Funkadelic refracted into different dimensions, weird portals and warm nocturnal joy rides alongside the coast (a reflection of it being mixed near the beach in California). The synthesizers are alien but the drums speak a universal language. Over the course of five albums, Shabazz Palaces have conceived the fluid boundaries of their own one-band genre.
“Shabazz Palaces are often as mystifying as they are mind-bending, but they’re in a class all their own” – Pretty Much Amazing
“Gently disorientates you with dizzying vibrations, droning, ephemeral space sounds and abstract noise pieces that don’t so much blow you away, as lull you into a deep cosmic trance. It’s really quite beautiful” – The Line of Best Fit
“It is the right combination of introspective and funky. If you need something both banging and relaxing, Shabazz Palaces got you covered” – Rap Reviews
